A Toniebox is a kid-friendly audio player, without a screen, that is designed for kids aged 1 to 9 to use independently. It plays stories, audio and songs connected to small magnetic figurines, called Tonies, that are often in the form of well known characters.
I got a Toniebox for our daughter and have learnt a lot since we invested in one. In this post, I’m going to share all my savvy tips you need to know before you buy another character and easy ways to get cheap tonies.

Check the Run Time
You want to make sure you’re getting the most for your money by checking the Tonie run time before buying. Checking the run time of a Tonie character can be the difference between getting 2 hours from one character and just 30 minutes from another.
Of course, the ones with the longer run times are better value for money.
Listen to the Audio Sample
Make sure you listen to the audio sample before you buy. Sometimes a character doesn’t speak the same as it does in their film. It’s a whole different sound system so it might sound a little off. For example, the minion Tonie doesn’t sound like a minion. Shrek doesn’t sound like Shrek.
My little one (and I’m sure others) only love a character for its voice so I always make sure to check before I buy by listening to the audio sample. I’ve made the mistake before and my daughter didn’t like the character as they didn’t sound like they do in the films.
Try Before You Buy
The characters are magnetic so you can put the Tonie onto your ToniesBox without removing it from the packaging. As the original packaging is still intact you can try the Tonie and if your little one doesn’t like it, simply return it. Just make sure to keep the receipt and return it within the returns window.
Use The OG Tonies
Most Tonies bundles come with a creative Tonies character. Use it to its full potential!
You can record your own voice onto it, it has meditation tracks and 1 hour of stories and songs on it too. Use these before you begin investing in other characters.
Look at The Breakdown
Did you know you can look at the audio breakdown of a character on the Tonies website? Well you do now!
I always make sure to check the breakdown online of what exactly the character runs through. This way you can check that it’s actually what you’re after.

Buy Pre-Loved
Vinted is full of brand new and never used Tonies characters. This is a great place to grab cheap Tonies that have never been opened. Take a couple extra minutes to check pre-loved sites before buying brand new and you might snap up a bargain.
Get Cashback
If you can’t find cheap Tonies on a pre-loved site and decide to make the purchase directly through the Tonies site, make sure you’re getting cashback.

We love our TonieBox and it’s the one we decided to go with, but there are alternatives out there which are more budget friendly. Lots of friends have recommended Yoto Players and I did recently get a kids Echo Dot for just £30 which does a very similar thing. So it might be worth looking into alternatives before you get caught up buying new Tonies all the time.
