Meet Megan, Your Favourite UK Money Blogger
Hi, I’m Megan Micklewright, a Birmingham-raised mum of two and the founder of The Savvy Spender. This is my UK money blog, where I share simple, realistic ways to save money, make money and grow your money, even when your budget feels tight.
I’ve spent over 10 years finding ways to make, save and grow my own money, and today I help a community of more than 150,000 followers do the same. I was named Financial Influencer of the Year 2023, and my first book is out now. But I didn’t start out with my finances sorted, far from it, which is why my advice is built for real life rather than perfect budgets.

Who Is The Savvy Spender?
The Savvy Spender is a UK personal finance blog built on one idea: you don’t need a huge income to feel in control of your money. You need a few good habits, some clever tools and someone honest about what actually works.
I’m a proud brummy and a mum of two girls, so you’ll find plenty of family life in here too, from budget friendly days out to simple ways to start investing for your children. Doesn’t matter if you’re a new parent, a student, or just fed up of watching your pay disappear, you’re in the right place.
What they did teach me is that I never wanted to rely on a single 9 to 5 salary.
From a Birmingham Council Estate to Money Blogger
I grew up on a council estate in Birmingham, watching my mum juggle cleaning jobs and ironing to keep us afloat after my dad’s failed business left her with debt to clear on her own. I never liked asking for money, so from a young age I found ways to make my own. I sold snacks out of my school backpack, made personalised bracelets for my friends at 13 and even sold Avon under my mum’s name.
As I got older, the ventures kept coming: forever flower arrangements, baby shower set ups and a vegan bakery. They all brought in good money, but I never loved any of them enough to turn them into a full-time business.
How Maternity Leave Started The Savvy Spender
My daughter was born in May 2021, and living on Statutory Maternity Pay (SMP) was a real squeeze. I wanted to bring in some extra income, and I wanted to share the journey publicly so other parents could learn from it.
In September 2021 I set up my Instagram page, @thesavvyspenderofficial, and started sharing every money saving tip and side hustle I tried. This blog grew from there.
What You’ll Find on The Savvy Spender
Everything on this personal finance blog falls into three simple areas
Save Money
Cutting costs doesn’t mean cutting out everything you enjoy. My Save Money page is packed with practical guides on cutting your bills, kids eat free schemes in the UK and budget friendly recipes that make the weekly shop go further.
Make Money
The Make Money section covers everything from one-off bonuses to longer term side hustles, including bank switching offers, selling on Vinted, UGC and free money offers.
Grow Your Money
Investing can feel intimidating, so I keep it simple. Head to Grow Your Money for beginner friendly guides on Premium Bonds, investing for your kids, and whether to overpay your mortgage or invest.
How I Make Money Online
There’s no single route to making money online, and what works for me might not work for you. My advice is to give a few options a go and stick with the ones that suit your lifestyle
Right now, I make money online through:
- Survey sites
- Website testing
- Free money offers
- Market research studies
- Mystery shopping
- Refer a friend schemes
I’ve earned thousands from these side hustles, although results vary and depend on the time and effort you put in.
The Savvy Spender
My first book, The Savvy Spender: How to Make, Save and Grow Your Wealth, is out now. It’s made up of seven practical chapters covering everyday spending and saving, dealing with debt without judgement, saving for your goals, investing made simple and, my personal favourite, side hustles. At its heart is a shift from a scarcity mindset to an abundance mindset, which completely changed how I think about money.
Why You Can Trust What I Share
Money advice is only worth following if it comes from someone who has been there and is upfront about how they work. I’m not a bank manager or a financial adviser. I’m someone who has lived through the tight money years and worked my way to something better.
Everything I share comes from my own experience and is written for UK readers, so the accounts, schemes and offers I talk about are ones you can actually use.
Real Life Experience
I’ve lived the tight money years. I grew up on a council estate in Birmingham, got through life on Statutory Maternity Pay, and have spent over 10 years testing ways to make, save, and grow my own money. I’ve earned thousands from side hustles like survey sites, website testing, and market research, and I’m investing for my two daughters in Junior ISAs. So when I share a money saving trick or a side hustle, it comes from real life, not theory
Practical Knowledge You Can Use
I focus on everyday UK money topics: cutting your bills and weekly shop, side hustles and one-off bonuses, and beginner friendly investing. My book, The Savvy Spender: How to Make, Save and Grow Your Wealth, brings it all together in seven practical chapters, so you get the full picture rather than a handful of one-off tips
Recognized and Trusted
I was named Financial Influencer of the Year 2023, and I share my tips with a community of more than 150,000 followers. I’m also a published author, and I work with brands from fintech to lifestyle.
Please note that I’m not a regulated financial adviser. My content is for education and inspiration only and isn’t personal financial advice, and capital is at risk when you invest. Do your own research or speak to a qualified adviser before making big money decisions.
Work With The Savvy Spender
I’m always open to working with brands and services that fit my values, from fintech and banking to family and lifestyle. I can help with:
