I’ve been side hustling for over a decade and talking about it online for more than five years, and the question I get asked most isn’t “what side hustles exist.” It’s “which one should I actually do?” Those are two completely different problems, and most content out there only answers the first one.

Not how much time you’d like to have. How much you genuinely have, most weeks, without it eating into sleep or time with the people you love. Fifteen minutes a day needs a different side hustle than five hours on a Saturday.
What Side Hustle Would Actually Fit Your Life Right Now?
This is the bit most guides skip. A side hustle that suits a single person with a quiet flat isn’t the same as one that suits a parent with a toddler who naps for forty minutes at a time. Look for something that slots into the gaps you already have – your commute, dinner cooking, nap time – rather than something that competes with them.
Do You Want to Work From Home or Out and About?
Some people want to be sat on the sofa with their phone. Others would go stir crazy without leaving the house. There’s no wrong answer, but it matters. Reselling and surveys work from your sofa. Mystery shopping or bank switching gets you out of the house.
Answer those three honestly, and you’ll have already cut your options down from “everything” to a shortlist that actually fits your life.

Side Hustles That Pay You for Your Time and Opinions
Surveys and market research studies both sit here, and they need almost no set-up. Survey apps like AttaPoll or MSR are easy to dip into during spare minutes, though the pay per survey is modest.
Market research studies pay a lot better for the same basic idea, sharing your opinion, and sites like Respondent and User Interviews match you with paid studies that businesses run to test products or get feedback. This is genuinely one of the best hourly returns on this list.
Side Hustles You Can Run From Your Phone
This covers reselling, cashback, and content-based side hustles. Cashback isn’t strictly a side hustle since you’re not earning new money, but a site like TopCashback is worth stacking on top of whatever else you choose, since it’s money you’re already spending anyway.

None of these are “the best.” They’re just different shapes, and the right one is whichever shape matches the three answers you gave above.
Is a Side Hustle Actually Worth Your Time?
This is the question people skip, and it’s the one that actually matters. A side hustle that pays well per hour but needs childcare to do it might genuinely cost you money.
One that pays modestly but fills fifteen minutes you’d otherwise spend scrolling is worth doing even at a lower rate, because the alternative use of that time was nothing anyway.
Work out roughly what a side hustle pays for the time it takes, and compare that honestly against what else you could be doing with that time.
Do You Pay Tax on a Side Hustle in the UK?
This stops a lot of people before they even begin, so let’s clear it up. You can earn up to £1,000 of gross income from a side hustle in a tax year completely tax-free, without telling HMRC, under what’s called the trading allowance. That’s £1,000 before any costs come off, not profit.
If your side hustle earns more than £1,000 gross in a tax year, you’ll usually need to register for Self Assessment and declare it by 5 October following the end of that tax year. At that point, you can either deduct the £1,000 allowance or claim your actual expenses, whichever works out lower, but not both.
One thing worth flagging: the government has announced plans to raise this reporting threshold from £1,000 to £3,000, but no start date has been confirmed yet, so £1,000 is still the figure that applies right now. Always check GOV.UK directly if you’re close to the threshold.
