What are Bank Switches?
Bank switches are monetary incentives offered by banks to encourage you to move your banking from a competitor to them. These are often in the hundreds and usually require you to complete a few steps. Typically, you will need to be a new customer or have never received an incentive before, although sometimes you can get around these rules.
To qualify for the incentive, you’ll typically need to pay in a certain amount over a set period. This is often achieved by your salary being paid in. Sometimes they will require you to switch over a minimum number of direct debits and make transactions. The exact requirements differ from offer to offer; some are more complicated than others.
Can Anyone Switch Banks?
Yes! In theory anyone can do a bank switch and it is possible to use the CASS without getting a financial reward. But not everyone will be eligible for the monetary rewards. Most switches come with T&Cs and you need to double check these to make sure you are not wasting your time.
Most of the time you will need to be a new customer to get the reward. Or at the very least have not completed the offer in the past. You might also be limited by sister banks, eg banks that are owned by the same father company. For example, HSBC and First Direct are owned by the same people so usually you can’t do bank switches with both of them.
Which Bank Pays the Most to Switch Right Now
Santander currently pays the most at £240, followed by HSBC UK at £220 and a group of banks paying £200, including NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland. Nationwide and First Direct both pay £175.
The biggest bonus is not automatically the best deal though. Santander’s £240 requires you to also open and fund a Regular Saver. Weigh the cash against ongoing fees, interest rates and how easily you can meet the switching conditions before you apply. I track every live switching offer from the big banks, check the small print, and tell you which one is actually worth the hassle.

What to Check Before You Switch
The cash bonus is only one part of the decision. Run through these five checks before you commit to a new bank
Size of the cash bonus
The headline number matters, but check how and when it is actually paid out.
Ongoing fees and perks
A free bonus is not worth much if the account then charges you every month.
Requirements you can meet
Minimum pay-in, direct debit counts and time windows all need to fit your budget.
Interest on your balance
Some accounts pay a decent rate on top of the switch bonus, some pay nothing at all.
App and customer service
You will be using this account daily, so a clunky app can outweigh a bigger bonus.

Bank Switching FAQ
Is switching my bank account safe?
Yes. The Current Account Switch Service is backed by a guarantee that covers you if anything goes wrong, and over 99% of switches complete within 7 working days without issue.
Do I have to close my old account?
Not always. A full switch through CASS normally closes the old account automatically. Some banks may offer a partial switch if you want to keep the old account open, so check the individual bank’s terms.
How long do bank switches take to pay out?
It varies by bank. Many bonuses are paid after you have met the required switching conditions, such as a minimum deposit and Direct Debits. Always check the specific offer terms.
Will my direct debits and standing orders be affected?
No. Every direct debit and standing order moves across automatically as part of the switch, and any payments sent to your old account are redirected for at least 3 years.
Can I switch if my account is overdrawn?
Often yes, but the new bank will run a credit check and may not accept an overdraft transfer above a certain amount. Check the offer’s terms or speak to the bank directly first.
Do I pay tax on the cash switching bonus?
For most people, no. Switching bonuses are generally treated as a reward for opening an account rather than taxable interest, though HMRC rules can change, so check if you are unsure.
How many times can I switch banks?
As often as you like, but you usually cannot claim the same bank’s switching bonus twice, and some banks exclude anyone who has held an account with them recently.
What happens if something goes wrong during the switch?
Your old and new bank are jointly responsible for fixing any errors under the Current Account Switch Guarantee, including refunding any interest or charges caused by the mistake.

Checked by hand, not just scraped
I’m Megan, and I read every switching offer’s terms myself before it goes on this page. No offer is added or kept live just because an affiliate link pays more.
Every entry above shows when it was last verified. If a bank changes its terms or pulls an offer, I update or remove it here as soon as I know.
